Cheesebrough Wood Rakes & Wooden Flagsticks

Elegant accessories for your grounds

Earlieron

Another flagstick design from early golf. This simple stick recalls the days when many flagsticks were metal, and might require a wooden grip during the hot summer months.

Another interesting feature sometimes found on solid metal sticks was a "pigtail" near the base to allow some flex in the wind. Today's player might not appreciate that "hazard".

Cheesebrough's morey flagsticks offer value in daily use or special event. They are not only attractive, they are durable, and we provide you with maintainance information on how to achieve the most years of service from them. Working with both domestic and exotic hardwoods allows us to build a flagstick for any environment. Along with the sticks shown, we can design and build the flagstick you might have in mind. We can also build sticks with any wood you choose, or even from a tree harvested from your grounds. Most of the sticks shown on this site are built with domestic hardwoods. Exotic hardwood is also available. The cost is comparable, but exotic hardwood is slightly heavier.

A selection of Stout bodies above.
NOTE: The camera lens slightly distorts the sticks.

Stout

The Stout has an 1 1/8" wooden dowel upper, and 1/2" fiberglass base rod. Far left shows a 6' with a Pelican flag that is attached with laces instead of our standard web loops. To the right is a painted Stout. It has two simple swatches of cloth often used in early golf for a "flag". The brass has been oxidized for an antique presentation. (This stick is a replica of a one found on a small old course in northern Europe. To its left is a 1.5" x 18" Tee Marker used on the same course.)

The pictures above show exotic hardwood sections. Top is new wood with sealer, and bottom an untreated stick that has been on our roof for three years. It has turned gray, but retains a relatively smooth finish. (You can see how sun-bleached exotic hardwood responds to re-sealing on the rake page.) Exotics work well if you want your grounds accessories to turn gray. They do not mildew or decay, but are heavier than domestic hardwoods.

At right is a 6' Perennial with our Twin Pennant flag. The combination of our wooden flagsticks and wooden spar flags make a striking presentation. Inset shows the lower brass connector.

The Tradition at right is designed for special event use.  The profiled brass base and profiled wooden upper are reminiscent of high-end early golf. This stick measures 9/16" at the top with a 1" grip, and 1/2" at ground level.  At top is our woven ash basket.  Inset shows the solid brass base.

Tradition

Shown at left is a 6' Staff. The all-wood body of the Staff is authentic for early golf.  It has a 3/4" base , tapering up to 1" at the grip, and then 9/16" at the top.  It is designed for special event use.

Staff

Earlieron  - Profiled wood grip
Perennial  - Profiled wood body (Our most popular flagstick)
Que          - Tapered wood body (Not shown - available 2012)
Slim          - 3/4" wood dowel body (Not shown - available 2012)
Stout        - 1 1/8" wood dowel body

Domestic hardwoods:
The stock stain color for domestic hardwoods is Early American, a medium brown. Custom stain colors are available. The finish is a clear gloss. Painted color striping is available on any stick.

Exotic hardwoods:

Exotic hardwood does not require protection. Left natural it will turn the typical gray you see in high-end patio furnishings. A periodic wipe of penetrating sealer will darken the wood, and keep it from bleaching.  We do not recommend a clear gloss finish on exotic woods.

FINISHES

Early Golf

If your presentation requires more natural (weathered) accessories, we can use exotic hardwoods. Exotics will gray over time and still remain reasonably smooth. They can be kept looking fresh with penetrating sealer. Similar to the linseed oils used in earlier times.

Flagstick length

Standard length is 7', and we can build any length you require. 5' sticks were used in early golf, and much of European golf still use them.

The tube on a typical flag can damage the finish on a wooden flagstick. To adapt our wooden sticks to accept a tube type flag we can install our "Universal" flag mount top shown on the Perennial at left.  The brass sleeve at the base of the upper fiberglass rod provides a rub surface for the tube.

"Universal" flag mount:
For Daily Use
Special Event Use
Staff           - Profiled all wood body with brass base ferulle
Tradition    - Profiled all wood body with 10" profiled brass base rod and ferulle
Whip          - All wood - 3/4" dowel  (Not shown - available 2012)

Warping

It is important to note that wood can "move" slightly with changes in moisture and temperature. That movement, although difficult to see in shorter sticks, can sometimes be noticed in longer sticks.

For a "seasoned" presentation, we can pre-oxidize the brass fittings.  Shown at left.

At left shows the Stout with the universal flag mount.
